Dell Inspiron 4000

I have a dell inspiron 4000 and the hard drive is starting to go. The current one is 10 Gb, and I wanted to upgrade the new one. I noticed 40Gb running at 5400rpm. Does anyone know if I would have to upgrade my bios if I increase my hard drive size. Also will I be able to install Windows XP on my 4000. I would like to upgrade my operating system when I am updating my drive. Any suggestions on hard drive/install/operating system would be appreciated.

 Thanks

Checkout this website for installation help.

We recommend that you upgrade your O/S to Windows 2000.
Windows XP is a hog on resources and your laptop may need more cost upgrades. Check out the great deals on newer Dell laptops.
If you pick an operating system, we opt for Windows Professional XP, not the Home Edition. MP.

We've had no problems with XP Home vs XP Pro and don't think the average computer user will benefit enough for the extra expense.  You will want at least 256MB of memory and many on the forum think 512MB is even a better minimum.  256MB low density memory modules which the 4000 requires are a bit pricey if you want to try and buy them at retail.

You can stick any 9.5mm thick lapatop hard drive in the 4000 without a BIOS upgrade.  FYI the BIOS upgrade is a simple 5-10 min procedure covered elsewhere on the forum.  It should though only be done using a floppy drive. The first BIOS was A01 and the current one is A23.  It is listed on page one of the setup screen.  If it were mine I would upgrade the BIOS unless I didn't have a floppy drive.

Thanks for the info. I have already updated the inspiron last year. I put in 512 megs of ram and purchased a new battery. My new hard drive is on the way 40 GB 5400RPM . I will also upgrade my operating system to XP, with a new firewall/virus protection software.

When installing XP better to start fresh rather than trying to upgrade current version of Windows.
