Device manager can't fix DVD

I'm trying to post to this board but keep getting the following error:

The message body contains the following prohibited content: 's--c--r--e--w--e--d' &n--b--s--p;You must remove this content before submitting your post.

I have been through my post 5 times and nowhere in there is this listed.  I don't have anylinks within the post.  Is this some secret gotcha?

I'm going to try and post in parts and see if I can figure out where the problem is:

I have a Dell Dimension 4700, with XP Pro

Upon a start-up I got an error message that Symantec anti-virus could not connect and it steered me to their website where I ran the System Restore Tool.  That fixed it, but it cause an error in Norton Ghost 10. No problem, I'll just reinstall it from the CD.  Big problem...both of my CD drives now have errors, windows cannot load the device drivers.  These are the original Dell CD drives.  Using Device manager, I tried uninstalling them, then rebooting, but I get the same error, cannot load drivers.  I tried using the "add hardware wizard" and I get error code 39..drivers may be corrupted.

Part 2:

Now opening my 4th beer, I tried to reinstall Norton System Works from my hard drive, no luck there.  Reboot now brings up 2 separate pop-ups, both the same "wait while Windows configures Ghost 10"  If  I cancel the first one, the next one pops-up and does the same routine...It sits there gathering information.  When it's finished, I must reboot.  When I try, I get Ghost 10 error 1719, installer service could not be accessed.  If I don’t say ok to reboot, then after about 5 minutes a dos window pops up MSI11E.tmp and the system shuts itself down and restarts.  If I manually reboot, the entire process also starts over again.  Unable to connect to service, then the duplicate pop-ups and its Ground Hog Day again!

I tried the Dell driver reset tool, no luck.  It found them automatically but couldn’t reset them.  I tried the Dell driver download area but can’t find an obvious driver for my dvd player.  On my invoice it is Item # 313-2433 and Part # K2810.  The description is: “16x dvd-rom drive.  I also tried the Hardware Update Wizard from windows but that also failed.  Device Manager lists it as:HD-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8163B.

If I hibernate, I'm OK but now I don't have Ghost, or my CD drives.  BTW, the cd drive did work 60 minutes prior to all of this because I used it to view some photos.

Any help would be appreciated!

Took a chance and used control panel to uninstall Ghost and now my DVDs are working just fine.  Should I now try to reinstall Ghost or is there something else I should do first?  I've run Malwarebytes quick scan and it doesn't show anything.  The rest of Norton Systemworks seems to be working ok.
