? diff btwn DVD+R and DVD-R

Why doesn't the DVD drive read both???

This is my dvd drive that came with my windows XP DIM4500 system purchased in 8/2002: Digital Video Disk Drive, DVD+RW, 4.7G, IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics), PHPS-CP, REV3, Chassis 2001

All of a sudden, the drive cannot read my NEW dvd's to write to them. I checked and the ones that worked were DVD+R and the new ones are Memorex DVD-R.

If I hadn't checked the forum, I would NEVER have known there was a difference. What is it?

I also read the FAQ and did the download and still no ability to read/write to the DVD-R dvd's.

This is an expensive lesson.

Thanks,

Carol

The only discs you can use are + so make sure you buy the right ones.+ and - are two different formats.

Thank you.  I've been using everything OK for over a year and did not even know.

I'm sure somewhere there is a notice about this but I've never seen it (guess I have to read the manuals closer).  But, by the size of this forum, there are a lot of people who haven't seen or read about this.

Hey Dell, if you are listening, you'd have more satisfied clients if you made this MORE OBVIOUS somehow.

Thanks again.  I'm off to get the +R DVD's.
