Dimension 4700 ATA speed

What highest speed ATA can I use on my 4700?
I thought I saw on one site that I have 2 ATA controllers and max was ATA-150 on the first and ATA-100 on second.
Also, whats the max number of internal disks, 4700 can have.  Is it 2 ATA disks and 2 IDE disks all at the same time?  Using all 4 slows down modes, causes PIO mode?  Can I boot off of any of the 4 disks?  Can I switch boot from one to another, have Win XP on one and maybe Linux on another, controllable by the BIOS?

Thanks,

olegjay,

You can have two SATA drives installed in your system and two IDE drives as well.  The IDE drives are normally going to be your CD drives.  The SATA drives operate at ATA-150 speed.  The onboard IDE controller is an ATA-100 controller.  Specs on the Intel 915G Express chipset can be found at this link:

Hi,

D4700,

I have OEM SATA hard drive and separate OEM DVD and CDR/W drives

I've since installed another SATA drive.

As both IDE conectors on the primary ( and only ) IDE connector are in use, for optical drives. To fit any more drives, assuming I have space and power ( connectors and capacity for the load ) I would have to fit an additional PCI  ATA control card to give two more IDE channels for a maximum of four more IDE drives.

The 4700 is not that well stocked with spare PCI slots. The OEM modem came out immediately to save a PCI slot as I use an ADSL broadband modem using the on board NIC port. On board sound is also adequate for my needs.

There would not be space in the case for these extra hard drives and I'd probably be approaching the limits of the power supply. There would also be heat to take into account with additional IDE drives.

With hard disk prices where they are at present.

Easiest and cheapest solution is larger SATA drives partitoned as necessary. The second SATA drive I fitted is partitioned into two equal 60gb drives.
