dimension 8100 will not boot error shown drive 0 operating outside normal parameters

this morning the computer crashed. it was in a scheduled scanning when a family member chose to turn the computer off. now it will not load. not yet able to determine if it is a disk problem or OS. however when the computer starts to boot the following is displayed:

 

"dell's disk monitoring system has detected that drive 0 on the primary EIDE controller is operating outside of normal specification. it is advisable to immediately backup your data and replace your hard disk..." 

 

selecting returns proceds forward and this message is displayed:

 

" windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt \system32\hal.dll. please reinstall a copy of the above file."

 

the above is shown while trying to normal boot and also attempting to startup in safe mode. Also, i tried to initate a safe recovery of win XP but when i get to the part after agreeing to the notes it will not complete and states that a previous operating system could not be found (or words to that effect)

 

i did manage to launch the recovery console and at the command prompt attempted Chkdsk /r. this process made it to 33% completion and then displayed: " the volumn appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems

20057120 kilobytes total disk space

3934784 kilobytes are available

4096 bytes in each allocation

5014280 total allocation units on disk

983696 allocation units are available

 

i figured i may be heck out of luck..however, any thoughts on possible avenues to correct?
