Dimension 8300 help

Dell has been using the Cable Select jumper for all their systems for many years, actually it is the norm, not Master/Slave.
However, I am from the old school and prefer the Master/Slave, but since we are trying to stay as close to possible with Dell`s standard, we will recommend Cable Select the majority of the time.
Usually we see problems when mix & matching the settings, one "should" either use Master for one device, the DVD/RW as an example and the second drive as Slave or Cable Select for both, but as I tend to say, nothing in this wonderful PC world is 100%, your is working.
I myself would use the set-up you mentioned in your last statement, but either way double check that both drives are runnig in DMA mode and not PIO mode; click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, article 14.

Predator, I'm sorry for the delay in responding

The drive is being recognised by Windows & will play DVD's normally.

However, I am using version 5 of Roxio in particular the Videowave movie creator

Although the application is listing the drive correctly, when you reach the "burn" part of the application, it is reporting -

the disc in the recordable drive is read-only, please insert etc etc

When trying through Windows Media Player I get:

No supported DVD-recorders were detected on your system

Any ideas?

Do you know if you are running Windows XP SP 1 or SP2?
If SP 1, jump over to Roxio`s site and apply the latest available update for your version.
If SP 2, then chances are pretty good you will have to purchase another version or search the net for a free program that supports XP SP2, SP 2 sort of broke Roxio`s and Nero`s version 5, some people were able to get it to work for awhile, but in the end gave up.

I have installed Ulead Moviefactory 3 & have now encountered a new error!

The application safely handles writing a data file but when converting a movie I get:

Microsoft Visual C++ RunTime Library

Program: Systems/Ulead DVD Moviefactory3/disc creator/DVDMF.EXE - abnormal program termination

A search on the web has revealed what appears a common Windows problem dealt with by Microsoft in their article 307817 but they talk of problems encountered after installing Office XP or an Office XP program.

Am I right in assuming that the problem described in the article is the same as I am having & as such I should follow the instructions in the article to rectify?

I'm slightly wrong here as article 307817 deals with the specific error message dealing with Mosearch & Mosdmn

However, is my problem connected in some way?
