Disk Defrag wont start

having problems with my dell dimesion c521.the disk defrag just wont start.you click on it and nothing happens.I decided to put the O.S. disk in to try the repair bit.the "boot from disk", came up when i restarted, then the "windows is loading files"...then,nothing....just a black screen.no options or anything.so i rebooted and manually started the disk in,"computer".only options that came up where a full install or an over the top install.i choice that option...still no defrag and now my sigmatel audio has gone nuts.i even got the latest drivers from dell but to no avail.i also got a blue error message one time after the reinstall but couldnt read it as it went off screen so fast.does it look like i'll need to do a full fresh install?
any help would be appreciated.
my c521 has vista home premium
32 bit.

Hi, Boot Hill:

Please go to this page and follow the instructions to restore your OS image.

Thanks for the reply. tried that link and done the F8 bit,but the advanced boot option wasn't there. I forgot to mention that the recovery partition was taken off the pc to release more hard drive space. Is that why the option wasn't available?

That might have something to do with it. Then you'll need to reinstall from scratch, starting from this link.

Good luck!

try opening the command prompt (start --> accessories) and type this: defrag c: /f
