disk drive problem, does not recognize when a cd is in the drive

Try these steps

Start the Run Command Prompt
Type in "regedit" without the parrenthesis then click ok
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Then SYSTEM
Then CURRENT CONTROL SET
Then CONTROL
Then CLASS
Then find {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
The whole thing looks like this:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Then delete the upper and lower filters....

RESTART YOUR COMPUTER THEN THERE YA GO!!!! HOPE THIS HELPS

Try any disks you have available. IF none of them work then the drive has possibly failed. If you can try the drive in another computer.

Look in the Device Manager .........

Start | Control Panel | System in classic view | Hardware tab | Device Manager

Click on the (+) next to DVD/CD-ROM drives.  Right-click the drive and select Properties.
If there is an Error Code (number) present, then follow the instructions to remove the
UpperFilters and LowerFilters.  The following includes a picture ............

I tried that and mine still says insert DVD. But Im positive it stopped working after I deleted easy cd creator or direct x, trying to unclutter my pc. which I now regret doing.

the position of my dvd says 0 and my cd rom is position 1 is that ok? is it possible im missing part of the software or something? the driver appears to be ok.

I tried downloading the drivers from dell but when hit the dl button the screen just goes dark?

How do I know if I have the correct software and driver? it is model : JLMS DVD-ROM XJ-HD166

You have the correct driver.  There is only one and it is a generic
Microsoft driver.  All optical drives use it.

Does your drive appear in My Computer?

Does the drive read CDs?

Yes it appears in my computer.  DVD Drive (D:)

It will not read any disc at all, the lights go on and i can hear it spin up but it does not read them.

in my comp, in drive D, the DVD drive, under properties the location says 0, where as the cd rom drive says location 1. does that matter?

The odd thing is like i said my DVD drive stopped working after i removed a few programs from my pc.

Can I find those programs and re-install them?

does a DVD drive need a de-coder?

I would call back and see if you can get someone you can understand. If Not then ask them to transfer you to another person who you can.

Are you absolutely sure you went into the correct area? so many of those registries look the same.

I did perform that on my pc, ( erased the filters and my DVD still does not work )

Hey well I guess the reason I was so confused on the upper and lower filters, after looking at the picture you provided me, upper and lower filters are NOT in my list in the right pane?!?  Now what?

I am so stressed, was on the phone with Dell rep for 3 hours, and we tried and tried to do the dell connect thing, so he could take control of my mouse and check out my drives, never could get connected. We even downloaded a new browser (since internet explorer wouldn't connect) and dwnloaded foxfire, and still would not connect for us. I finally got so tired of being on my cell, not to mention, the language barrier (I had to just keep asking him to repeat himself, heck I couldn't understand his accent, that always happens to me :(    I have computer troubles and language barriers as well.) I finally gave up, and he is supposed to call me back, but I don't think i can deal anymore today. I don't know what the heck is wrong!  Any ideas?

When you say "It will not read any disc at all", I take it
that it does not read CDs. 

To view DVD movies a DVD Decoder is required, but if the drive
will not CDs or data DVDs, it may have failed.

You can check the drive by running the Dell Diagnostics on the
drive.  The Diagnostics should be on your hard drive.  Press F12
at startup while the blue Dell is on the screen.  This will take
you to the boot menu where the Utility Partition or Diagnostics
will be a choice.  Run the Custom Test for the drive and have a
data CD or DVD (not music CD or movie DVD) ready for the read test.

If both filters are missing, it may be that the drive is not present (electrically).
Does the drive appear in the Device Manager?

Also, what model computer do you have?

Okay, if I get it straightened out in the near future, you'll be the first to know. ha! They also tried to help me download some drivers and some other things & not one single one would complete download. One was I think a TSST Firmware, I thought it was gonna work, and when the box popped opened, it said click on the word FLASH to start the download, and I got an error message that said, "This is not support model series.", whatever that means. There were about 5 of em all together, not all for drivers, and NONE of em would download, so go figure.

I've never NOT been able to do the dellconnect.com thing either where they take control of your mouse. In fact, I am quite the old pro at it ha!  I'd click the link, the region,  choose the #3, hit I agree and put in the code (several codes) he gave me, and it would start to try and connect, then FREEZE and immediately take me straight back to the screen where you enter the code the rep gives you. We tried so many times, I finally told him; I am done for now, tired and gotta get away from this computer (not to mention his heavy accent)! 

So not sure when I'll have the time to sit in this chair in front of this computer on my cell for hours on end again either, Thank goodness for AT&T and their rollover minutes, or I'd be screwed on my cell phone bill this month. Good Grief!

But i'll let you know ASAP if I get it fixed, and you do the same for me! I'm going to bed! ha!

I feel your frustration. one day mine worked fine and then I go to put a DVD on my Ipod and it doesnt work at all. I have a feeling it is something stupid. for instance

my pc did windows update onetime and after it completed that my wireless internet would not work. it took me a while to put two and two together but

i finally used system restore and then it worked. I tried system restore to fix this but i dont know for sure what caused it not to work so I did the earliest restore

point which was like last summer and it didnt help. Someone suggested trying the DVD player in another pc, so I may try that after I attempt the

dell diagnostic test someone suggested.

Is your pc still under warranty? I dont think they will 'take over my pc' and try to remotely fix it. I couldnt even connect to Dell's 'chat online' help thing.

Well I will definitely keep you updated and hopefully both of us can get our DVD players to work again! :)
