Disk Read Error

Hi

I own an Inspiron 1100. Thismorning when I went to use it, I was surprised to get a "Disk read error occured, press alt+ctrl+del to restart" msg on my screen. I did as it said, but only to see it happen again, and again, ect..

So I went to the Boot Menu when starting up, and did a diagnostic scan. Here are the results:

DST Short Status Test
Failed
Error Code: 1000-0142
Msg: Unit 4: Drive Self test failed. Status Byte = 75

I don't know exactly what that means, but it was working great with no signs of error what-so-ever until this happened, and I have no idea what may of caused it. If anyone has an explaination, or knows of anything that may help, please reply.

And so you know I'm posting this from my desktop, since my laptop is now inaccessible. I'm going to try some of the support disks, but I don't have them with me at the moment, but I'm not so sure that would help anyway.

Thanks.

The drive is failing. If you have data on it, purchase an adapter cable and mount it into a desktop - you may be able to save some of it.

If the system is in warranty, call Dell and report the error, and they will ship you a replacement drive. If it is out of warranty, any 2.5" notebook drive currently available will work just fine.
