Do I need 2 opticals?

I replaced my original CD-RW with a DVD/CD burner combo. I kept the original DVD player in the bay and set them up in a slave (burner) / master (player) combination because this was the only way that I could keep them from disappearing. My player took a dump and this knocked out my burner. I unplugged the DVD player, cleard the NVRAM, and am running with just the buner. Do I need the other optical? Also, when I put a CD or DVD player in the tray, the program(Windows Media Player) does not boot up to play it. I have to do it manually. Can I do something to change this?

Thanks,
seeburt

Hi Seeburt,

No you do not need two drives, honestly just a personal preference.
However it is best if you only have one drive, set the jumper to Cable Select (Dell`s standard) or Master and attach to the "End" connection of the IDE cable.
If you have to move the drive(s), uninstall the device(s) from Device Manager, then shutdown.
For the AutoPlay issue, you might have some luck with the Repair Wizard, click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 6-5, article 11.

Best Regards!

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.

Ok...I did a search on the google search for "CD auto detect", and the following link came up first: http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-11184-0.html?forumID=56&threadID=178660 . I did what it said for each optical and I seem to have solved my problem with the auto detection.

Thanks For All the Support!

I spoke to soon: because of some issues with my printer, I decided to delete it and reinstall. When I put the driver CD in...it spun...the light blinked...and NADA! I rebooted; cleared the NVRAM; ran the maintenace check through . It said that the CD-RW was not compatible???? This is the original CD-RW that my computer came with. I'm thinking that maybe it is time for a fresh start and reinstall XP. I have a 2003 computer so the Symantec Restore is a lonley wish. If I'm having trouble with my CD-RW now, is it possible that it may not be able to boot from it when I choose "boot from CD"? Can I attempt to start the process and abort if it does not seem to be able to boot?

thanks  : (

Seeburt:

Did you set the jumpers as Jeff suggested?

I tried them in both cable select and slave/master. I've since pulled them both and replace them with my DVD-burner.

When I install a disk of any kind, my computer doesn't prompt to the screen that asks you what program you wish to use to open the file; It does recognize that a disk is installed, but doesn't know what to do with it. If I have Windows Media Player open when I insert a CD or DVD it plays just fine. If I close that program and try to insert a disk, I'm back where I started. If I put in a picture CD, I have to choose the optical manually through the appropriate program, but it does open. It will also burn photos and music. It will not do anything with a driver disk such as my printer driver.

Thanks for the help

Try running the autoplay repair wizard again.

I'd already done it, but I tried it again and made a copy of the log. The auto-fix could not remedy the problem:

Here's a little more info. I put in my printer driver cd while I had media player open, and it tried to run it for about 20 seconds then wound down. I closed media player, open and closed the tray, and it ran. So I exited, pulled the cd,  opened another windows file, closed the file and tried to run the driver cd again and nothing happened. I repeated the initial steps above and it booted up.

I have only a DVD burner installed, and it's in Master. It is at the end of the cable strip for good luck.

Ok, please remind me where exactly things stand. What drives are installed where, what jumper settings, what does the BIOS report, etc.

If you've but one drive, you must use CS. Can't use master.

I'll be out for a few hours, my nephew's playing some baseball and I'm the family photographer.
