Dreaded 0146 error

Hi,

I have heard about this problem before and just wanted to get some finalised information about it.

So I was on my laptop as usual(specs at bottom of post) and everything just started lagging. So I restarted and it went into an infite startup repair loop which of course it  could not fix. So I opted for the option to partition my drive with a backup of all my stuff. I let this do it's thing but fell asleep when it was on about 90%. Woke up next day and booted my laptop, and it was reformatted, without my backup folder (great). So anyway, forgetting about the fact that that had messed up somehow, I was eager to see if the laptop was working fine. It wasn't and isn't. I can boot it and whatnot, but it is awfully slow to use.

So after some googling, I ran the diagnostics, and I got the error code - 2000-0146.

So what now? I need to get this fixed very quickly as my laptop is vital to my university work and stuff.

Specs -

Dell XPS L502x

Win7 home prem

Intel i5-2540 CPU @ 2.6GHZ

6.00gm ram

64 bit OS

Thanks for any replies, and Ill be here all day/night to reply swiftly.

Thanks for the swift reply and I realise that I need to get a new drive >.<

Next question - What drive do I get? I gave a currys/pcworld jusr round the corner which is open at the moment, so could I potentially go in there, get a new drive and have everything working by the end of the night?

Could I go out the way and ask you to recommend some specific drives? I mainly mean regarding size (not capacity)

Also, this is then main bit, I don't now how to install a new hard-drive or remove my old one..

Thanks

There are only 3 makers of drives left in the world.  Seagate, Western Digital, Toshiba.

Applicable Drives would be Seagate Momentus and Western Digital Scorpio in retail channels.

When you say remove and REINSTALL, what do you mean by reinstall?

I have removed it from the laptop, but now?

Run the DST Short Test on the Hard Drive only.

PSA 1000-0146

PSA+ 2000-0146 DST Log contains previous error(s).

There are no fixes for physically bad drives.

Replacing the drive requires reinstall Media.

How or If you can get that depends on what country you are in.

Also, you say to contact but because my warranty is run out it would appear that the only way I can contact is by telephone which is expensive and I can't really afford..

I am not dell.

I do not live in the UK.

So the answer is

I don't know.

Borrowing a Disk from a Friend is fine if its the exact same version of windows.

"Woke up next day and booted my laptop, and it was reformatted, without my backup folder (great)."

The damage seems to be software.  You will have to request REINSTALL Media from Dell tech support.

Hmm ok. Do you know if this will cost me?

Also, do I just email them regarding the problem and ask for the media?

And, could I borrow a disk from a friend?

Regards to obtain the Dell reinstallation disc, contact Dell's UK Technical Support.

Yes, Dell will charge for the disc, how much I have no idea.

You could also, try browsing eBay, I have seen Dell OEM reinstallation discs for sale there, remember, as already noted, it must be the same flavour as the windows version that was factory installed.
