Jeff,  I just installed a Sony DRU-830A  DVD/CD Rewritable Drive where my old Philips DVD R/RW Drive was.  I hooked up cables as they were on the Philips drive but nothing seems to work.    This is the previous message I posted, and I got a reply to  change to drive jumper:   I just installed the Sony DVD/CD Rewritable drive, once I restarted the PC (Dell Dimension 8400)this message appears.  Drive 5 not found: Parallel ATA, PATA-1 (PRI IDE SLAVE)  I connected the cables exactly as they were on the Philips DVD R/RW that I removed.  Can you tell me what's wrong?    Thank you!

Depends on the particular drive as there is no 'standard'.  On most drives there is a diagram or at least markings to indicate which is which.  The Cable Select may be labeled 'CS' or 'CSEL'.  That is the jumper position you need to use. The jumper will pull out and you can plug it back in to the correct position.

Hi Gkbuck,If you changed the jumper on the new drive to match the Dell drive you removed, it 'should' be on Cable select. Hi Gkbuck,Your 8400 series has 4 SATA ports which supports 4 devices; 1 PATA (IDE) port/channel which support 2 devices. The SATA will be Drive 0 through Drive 3; Your IDE will be Drive 4 and Drvie 5. If you have two optical drives, then if Dell stayed true to form, the DVD/RW will be in the second bay, thus Drive 5.If this is the case, you should enter the BIOS/System setup and enable the drive.
