DST short test code 2000--0146 and bootcfg/rebuild or chkdsk doesn't work
Hello, I have a Inspiron 1505 w/XP sp2. My first problem showed up as the 'blue screen.' (windows terminated....) Then I got the "system 32 \hal.dll is corrupt or missing replace it" notice. Now my computer won't boot (sits on the xp logo page frozen). I ran the PSA and got the hard drive DST code 2000-0146. I saw on other threads to try and rebuild the bootcfg using the /fastdetect command but I get the "unable" notice (I've tried this multiple times). I then tried using chkdsk multiple times and it doesn't say I have any problems.
At first I assumed it was my hard drive, but then wouldn't something show up using chkdsk?
I just wanted to get someone's opinion on what is wrong before I try and re-install windows xp and lose my data.

There's no point in reloading Windows on a faulty hard drive - replace the drive, and then load Windows.

It's hardware.
Physically replacing the hard drive is a 10-minute job. Reloading Windows is the time consuming part - figure on at least a few hours for that (Geek Squad, et. al. will do it for you but the charge will be more like $300 than $35).

I bought a new hard drive and installed it and windows. I didn't know changing the hard drive would be that easy.
On another note; my computer won't let me hibernate or go to standby and the monitor won't come back on after I open it back up. I've had to shut down the computer and restart. Under power management, I've selected "ask me what to do" when I "hit the power button." But the only options are to turn off or restart. I have never seen this. Any ideas?

Did you load the Dell notebook system software and the chipset driver, before loading any other drivers?

No I didn't. Looks like I'm going to have to reload windows. A few times windows has shut down with the blue screen of death. It said something about a driver memory pool problem. Once when it was restarting, it said it could not load windows because of a system32/config file problem.
So afer I reload windows, I should install the drivers for the system notebook and then the chipset, then everything else?
