DVD burner doesn't read CD's

Well i have heard of this happening.. But my DVD burn won't read blank CD's or it won't read pc games... The Burner does still read and burn DVD's... did the laser inside just get messed up? or did it break?

when i put in a CD the light blinks about three times and you can here it spinning.. then it all just stops... and if you go to my computer it shows there is nothing in the drive...

Any suggestions?

Its a converted Dimension 8300 (used to be dim 4300)... The only things that are different is i have a 600w psu, and an old graphics card. Otherwise they are all 8300 components....

did you check for firmware update for the Drive. You can find it on support.dell.com >> Drivers and downloads.

and also delete the upper/lower filters from theh registry. Dont forgeore t to take a backup of the registry before you make changes.

This is the microsoft article you can refer to: http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B314060&x=12&y=13

REGISTRY BACK UP

Start>> Run>> type "regedit" >> OK

Go to "File" >> "Export" >> select all at the bottom and give a name to the file, and save it. Make sure you remember the path of the file.

Incase, it happened after certain hardware or software changes then, do a system restore first.

Ok, so this is not a Dell drive. Jump over to this review site and you should be able to find a firmware download. Try that and if that does not work, then it's upgrade time.

DVD±RW drives are dirt cheap right now, with Blu-Ray and newer technologies coming.

Sorry, the company is out of business and I can't seem to locate any firmware.
