DVD Burn/Read

Hi , I need some help with a DVD/ burning and Reading Problem.

I just got a new 8400 with a Philips DVD R+-RW DVD 8631. I also just updated the firmware thanks to this forum. I also have a Dell 4100 with a Samsung DVD-Rom SD-612. I cannot find the Samsung in the Dell support for any updates or on the Samsung web site.

What I have been trying to do is write a  data DVD disk on the 8400 (which works) and then read it on the 4100. The 4100 DVD ROM will read and play movies or video DVD's and I ran Nero diagnosties that says the DVD -ROM drive is OK. When I put the data DVD disk in the Samsung DVD-Rom all it does it spin. The computer is locked up until I eject the Data DVD.

Any advice or recommendations?

Thanks,
Buddye

Hi Buddye1,

Your Samsung drive is working fine, and I would not do a firmware update.

Sometimes  media burned in a computer can not be read by another, or a standalone player. You will have better luck with CD-R.
This is a link that gives compatability information about DVD media.

Buddye:

ctalia is correct. You should have no trouble reading CD-Rs, but of course if you've trying to copy lots of data, those CD-Rs get used up quickly.

That Samsung drive is quite old, so there is a chance it will not read DVD-Rs burned on your new DVD burner. However, I would be willing to bet it can read DVD+Rs. This is an older format as far as data is concerned. I suggest you buy Verbatim DVD+R blank media.

Hi Guys,
Thanks. I have ordered the Verbatim +R DVD's today. I will give them a try and report back when I get them in case others are having media/compatability problems.

Thanks again,
Buddye
