Dvd/ Cd drive

I don't know what happened but I was watching a dvd and all of a sudden my computer got all messed up and I had to restart it and when I got it back up, it wouldn't read cds or dvds. I tried lots of different cds and dvds but it just wouldn't work. This happened to me one time before and I wrote an email to dell support and they helped me fix it, but this time I couldn't understand the emails they replied. PLEASE HELP ME!!!! Sarah

Sarah,
You will need to provide more information. Your computer model, operating system, CD drive manufacturer and model, any/all CD recording software, maunfacturer and model of any other optical drives you may have installed, DVD player software and any other information that may be relevant.

Oopsie....I accidently sent that when I wasn't done.....anyways: This is what it said: Dell Computer Corporation Dell DIMENSION DIM4500 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.00GHz  1.99GHz 256 MB of RAM

And I also know I have windows XP and I burn C.D.'s on Roxio Easy Cd Creator and I run DVD's on Power DVD.....if that's any use to you. Thanks again!, Sarah

Check the status of the drives in Device Manager. Right click My Computer, click Properties, click Hardware, click Device Manager, click the plus sign next to DVD/CD-ROM drives. Are the drives listed? Check for any red 's or yellow 's.

Thanks for replying so quickly. I tried to look at my hardware but nothing was showing up for hardware on my computer. What I mean is that there wasn't even anything that said hardware for me to click on! Sarah

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
  3. Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
See image below, the Hardware tab and Device Manager Button are circled in red.

Sarah,

I edited my previous post to correct an error in the instructions I typed. Sorry about that.

There wasn't a properties button for me to click. The ones I have are: Appearance and Themes, Network and Internet Connections, Add or Remove Programs, Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices, Performance and Maintenance, Printers and Other Hardware, User Accounts, Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options, Accessibility Options

Thanks again for replying....I know I'm difficult but as I said, I really don't know much about computers. Sarah

Yep, they were listed and there weren't any red X's or yellow !'s. So, now that we know that, what should I do? Thanks Sarah

P.S. I think last time when I had this problem, I did something with the Command Prompt, but I'm not sure.

Try uninstalling the IDE controller to force a reinstall of the drivers. You will find instructions here, look at the "Check the Drivers" section of the article. If this does not help try the other steps from the article.
