DVD Drive driver is missing
My DVD/CD-ROM drive is not functioning today. The Device Status message is "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The drive may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)". The drive name is "PBDS DVD+-RW DH-16W1S".
I've tried reloading the driver but I can't seem to find a source for it. I also tried rolling back to a system restore point but the driver for the DVD drive was apparently not saved. I've also tried the Windows troubleshooter without success. Can you recommend a solution?

Look for a post by Osprey4; in his signature file are links to helpful tools, one of which is the "Upper/Lower Filters" trick. Use that as a first try because a registry problem seems to be the most common cause of your described error.

The MicrosoftFixIt DVD program resolved the problem. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

My Dimension 8400 computer does not recognize the CD or DVD disk drive. It use to work just fine in the past, I don't know when it went bad,
I have tried all kinds of tests but no luck.
Can you recommend a solution I can try??

%windir%\inf\infcache.1 may be corrupt. Try deleting it and rebooting.
Typically, %windir% is C:\Windows, so look for C:\windows\inf\infcache.1
Alternatively, the drive itself may be failing. Is it recognized by the BIOS? If you have a Windows install CD, will it boot from it?
