DVD Drive not working
I have a NEC ND-3530 DVD rewriter on a brand new Dimension 8400 (XP, 3 ghz, 512mb, 80gb HD).
When I put my Data CD's and DVD's the following happens.
1. It takes up to a minute for the drive to recognise that a disk is there. Even when it does, sometimes it does not allow me to explore it further via File Manager (no + sign).
2. When I tey and transfer the files (copy and paste), it gets to about 50% of the transfer and an error comes up. I have been unable to trasfer any files.
3. When I try and install any software, it either doesnt even autorun or else only gets to about 50% of the installation before an error.
Therefore as this is the only drive I have on this new PC (i only set it up Saturday), I can not read, transfer or install anything. These are ordinary files (word doc etc) and I am trying to install Office etc. I have used the same disks on my other Dell with XP with no problems.
I have updated the drives firmare from 10A to 10C (v103C) with the drivers downloaded from the Dell website (R104223.EXE)

Was the firmware flash successful, or is that when you got the errors?
The "Data redundancy Error" may be due to a slow transfer mode. Check the properties of your IDE controller (the one your drive is attached to) and see if the transfer mode is set to PIO. The usual fix for this is to delete the IDE controller in Device Manager and reboot.
You may also have a loose IDE cable on the drive.

The "Transfer Mode" is DMA if avaialble and the "Current Transfer Mode" is Ultra DMA mode 2.
Do I go ahead and delee the primary IDE Channel? Can I recover if if need be? Do I try and update its drivers?

No, it should be UDMA 2, so you're fine there.
Check to see if you have a program called Sonic DLA running or installed. If so, uninstall it and see if things improve.

I deleted Sonic DLA and its helped alot. The drive now recognises data disks and I was able to install some software (office etc) but data reading/transfer is slower than it should be. There are still some errors and it seems to have difficulty with auto run self install programes. Still, at least I am getting some where. Is there anymore i can do?
