dvd drive

Question

My computer (Inspiron 1100) does not detect the dvd drive anymore.  I recently downloaded a cd rip program, it worked fine then just stopped.  The drive is not located in the device manager and I don't even show a cd/dvd icon.  Please help

Look in the Set-up (BIOS) and make sure the drive is enabled or ON.

What version of Windows are you running on the PC?  Give more details on the CD drive and software installed.   I only ask as I have seen where in some versions of Windows the ASPI driver can get out of whack due to a software install.  Often the correction is to restore the bad driver. I'm running xp, how do I 'resire'.  I plan on disconnecting the dvd player from the system and reconnecting hoping the computer will see the hardware.  I'm not sure of the dvd maker because the computer doesn't show me any install.  It came with the computer

Sorry, more background questions . . . Did this PC come with Windows XP? If so was the CD/DVD drive visible in "Device Manager" when you first received the laptop?

I am assuming all was working fine until you loaded the CD rip software - is this correct?

What I would do is ensure that there are no errors showing under "Device Manager" in regards to the IDE controller that the CD/DVD drive is connrected. To Skybird's point, does the the drive show up in the BIOIS?

To enter the Set-up, restart the system amd press F2 while the blue Dell is showing.
