DVD player "stutters"

When I try to play a DVD on my new Inspiron 600m, the video and audio "stutter" after 20 minuntes or so. At that point, it plays, but intermittently. There are no other programs running at the time (not even the anti-virus). How do I fix this?

I appreciate your input, and followed your advice. When I checked my settings, though, they are already set for DMA. Any other suggestions?

It may be prudent to check that your DVD drive hasn't slipped into PIO mode.

To do this look in device manager> ide controllers> secondary ide controller> properties> advanced settings. Your current transfer mode should read UDMA 2 and not PIO.

When you say "they are already set for DMA" do you mean that it says use DMA transfers if possible or the current transfer mode has DMA in its mode setting?

ok, do all your DVDs exhibit this behaviour or just one?

The transfer mode says "DMA if available." The current transfer mode line says "Ultra DMA Mode 2."

All DVDs. I'm beginning to think that the laptop is heating up and causing the problem. Is that likely?
