Question

hello i have a dell dension 4550 intel pentium 4 cpu 3.06 ghz processor speed 2.98 512 meg of memory   the problem i am havimg is when i play a dvd it tends to skip a little on and off is there something i can do to stop the dvd from skipping

Check the transfer mode of your DVD drive. This is most often caused by a drive in PIO mode, instead of DMA as it should be. A likely cause of this is the drive not being turned on in system setup.

To check the transfer mode, go to Device Manager and check the properties of the secondary IDE channel.

i went to my computer then i went to proerties on the dvd then on the filies it was listed as music files

Sorry, but you're not following me.

Restart your system and boot into system setup by hitting F2 as soon as you see the blue Dell logo. From the main screen you'll see the listing of your hard drives and optical drives as shown here:

Make sure your DVD drive is not set to OFF. Set it to ON. If it's already set properly, post back.

1. Open device manager 2. Expand 'IDE/ATAPI Controllers' node 3. Open properties of the 'Secondary IDE channel' 4. Go to the 'Advanced' tab 5. Change the transfer mode for Device 0 from 'PIO Only' to 'DMA, if available' 6. Click OK and close any dialog windows. Restart might be required for the new settings to be applied.
