DVD-R

Hey guys I installed a new cd drive in my XPS and its working fine. Yes, do not comment about updating drivers, everything works normal.

I insert discs and it reads them fine. But when I insert a DVD-R disc I hear the drive trying to read it, but the computer tells me that the drive is empty and I cannot continue to burn what I was trying to unless I add a blank disc.

Yes the dvd-r is blank, ive tried multiple ones. Yes, I am sure i have a cd/dvd burner.

Is it cause the cd type is DVD-R???

If you give the name/manufacturer/type of drive you are referring to it would be easier togive a definitive answer.

Have you tried any other type of burn media?  CD/DVD +/- R/RW?

The cd drive is Toshiba, which works fine when I play movies and insert other cd's with media inside. The DVD-R is from TDK.

Ace,

As Obey Gravity mentioned, a tad more information is still needed. Go to Device Manager, click the "+" next to CD/DVD drives and list the name/model of your optical drive(s).
Also, if you click on the Cd/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 7-5, you will find a couple of free utilities for providing a wealth information about your system, including your drive types and models, DVDInfo and Belarc Advisor

Best Regards!

Ace,

I could not find anything on Dell`s site, however according to this information:
http://www.ciao.co.uk/Toshiba_SD_R2412__5644005
Your drive is a Combo unit, a DVD-ROM(read only) CD/RW. You can read DVD`s, CD and burn CD-R /CD-RW media but not DVD media, sorry.

Best Regards!

It is a TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R2412

Device Type : DVD/CD-ROM drives

Manufacturer: (Standard CD-ROM drives)

Location: Location 1 (1).

When I try to update it from device manager , it says it cannot find a better match than the one i currently have. Maybe I have to update drivers?

Hi Ace,

CD`s for burning come in only one format, CD-R and CD-RW. DVD on the otherhand have three, DVD-RAM, DVD+ & DVD-, but to answer your question, no you cannot burn any of the DVD media.
Take a peek at some information provided bye one of our Regulars, Mike, Section 7-1, article 7 of the CD/RW link.

Best Regards!

I greatly appreciate your concern and looking for the answers because I had been on other forums and the answers I would receive were bogus and I never tried it. For example, re connect the drive, re insert disc. Thank you very much.

So any cd can be burned that says CD-R, CD+R, CD-RW, CD+RW, anything at all EXCEPT DVD+-R, correct?
