DVD R/RW Drive problem.
I have a Dimesion 4700 and a short while back the Disc Drive was damaged when a 'foreign object' got onto the tray along with the disc. Grinding noises!!
I removed the NEC ND3450A drive and replaced it with a Sony Optiarc AD-5200A, but there is a problem. It plays a DVD OK and it can read discs which have files on them - but it never shows correcltly how much disc has been used and how much remains unused. If the properties of a unused CD-R or CD-RW are examined then it appears that the disc is full and cannot be written to. Do I need a new driver???? Any help appreciated.

Hi, 1yobnek:
What program are you using to read the partially written discs?

Hello Osprey 4,
I read the discs via 'My Computer' and then 'Properties' or 'Open' with the results that I mentioned. But re-checking procedure made me think about pre-formatted discs and whether the discs I was using were of that type - I believe they were!
I re-formatted a disc using Sonic DLA and that has cured my problem in that the correct used space/free space numbers are OK. Reading and writing are OK, too. So, I am no longer sure about pre-formatted discs; I'll format them again with Sonic DLA before using them.
Thank you for your help. 1yobnek
