DVD/CD drive compatibility list

The Toshiba CDRW/DVD SDR2102 of my C810 Latitude apparently gave up and does not spin when I insert media despite being 'just fine' accordingly to Windows. I don't know how to fix it despite all my attempts (Dell tool kit test, firmware re-flashing, etc) so I decided to buy a new drive.

But this time I want a DVD burner as well. The problem is how do I know if certain drive is compatible or not with my system. While some sites provide such information, others (cheaper) just mention that the drive is a "Standard Size Drive" (example: http://www.upgradenation.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=DVDRW-%20SDW-082). My question is if there is a list of drive compatibility or something similar for when hunting these devices?

Thanks

Hi,

Windows looks to see if it can talk to the device, not that it spins. It is the same with a modem, if it can be seen, it is said to be working, but comes up no dial tone when you try to use it. The drive insert will have to be fitted, It looks right but you can buy a drive fitted to the bay module for a bit more money. The slim-line CD drives are like floppy drives, a standard size and format. You can ask them if it will work in your caddy, often the tray cover is not able to be fitted / easily.
