dvd+r burners

​ Is there anything I can do to my burner to be able to burn dvd-r? ​

Not if your burner is DVD+R.

If your DVD burner is an NEC drive you can update the firmware so it will burn -R as well as +R, including +R DL. Be aware that it will void the warranty.
