DVDROM not working

Question

I have a Dimension 4600 computer.  My Samsung DVDROM sd616Ecdromsys has stopped working.   I also have a TEAC DVD+DV-W58E that is working.  I have uninstalled it restarted and it still will not work.  The light blinks for 20 seconds and it makes noise but nothing.  When I go to my computer it does not recognize the disc. Is there anything I can do.   If I do replace it can I replace with a double layer burner and will it fit in the same slot.   Thank you for any help,   tig2

Hi Jeff,   I downloaded the update and ran it .  It says all files were unzipped. A box comes up with SFDNWIN at the top.  It shows my samsung drive.  Model name, old version, new version, status are all blank and beside ddownload file it says: not open.  zi tried twice and the same thing.   Thanks for your help.    tig2

Hi Tig,My web server is down, I am at work, back up notes are home, so I am lost.Dell does have a firmware update for the drive listed here:Samsung 616ESee if this will help.Yes, you can replace the drive with a DVD/RW dual layer burner. Hi Tig,

You must be logged on as Adminstrator. Some Members have had to disable the other drive on the IDE cable before the firmware will run. Many have not, but there have been a few. You can do this from BIOS/System Setup, or shutdown and simply disconnect the IDE cable from the second drive.

You lost me!  In device manager I have 2 intel storage controller and a primary and a secondary Ide channel.  Which are you talking about?  I don't think I am logged on as administrator.  How do I check.   Thanks again

Hi Tig,

I was working on two posts at once, my bad, had Device Manager on the brain. You disable/turn the drive off in the BIOS.
I will correct my previous post, sorry......

Got the update installed.  Said to restart computer. On Restart found new hardware, On device manager says it is working, but it still doesn't work.   Thanks again,  tig

When did this first occured?. try system restore first  ( max of 2 1/2 weeks before ) , if dosent do anything try to log in safe mode and see if it will read there. Are you using Sonic Cineplayer as well? Try the patch R142470.exe at support.dell.com website .

doesn't read the media at all ... then try exploring the DVD/CD .. no go ... do a PC restore.. no go .. replace the drive... The read head of the drive probaly has gone bad.. the hard ware is getting detected , but the head is not reading the DVD...
