DVD+RW: need basic help!

I just got a new Dell 4600 with both a CD-ROM and a DVD+RW burner.  I'm pretty new to burning CDs and DVDs.  At this point I'm only dealing with data -- and not music/movies.

I have a number of basic questions about making CDs & DVDs. For instance, once I burn or copy something (a small file) on to a new DVD+RW disc (using Sonic "Record Now" that came with the Dell), when I go back to add any more data to the disk, I get a message that says my disk is full (it's not); can you add data to a CD+RW disk that is clearly not full -- or do I have to erase everything and then re-record onto a blank CD+RW?  It also won't let me delete a file from a recorded DVD+RW.  It says that it's a "read only" disc and I can't erase -- unless I erase eveything from the disk.

As you can see, I'm fairly basic in my knowledge on this whole subject.  Is there a good site to go to, to get a basic primer on recording CDs & DVDs...and the different formats, etc?

In the meantime, can you answer my questions in paragraph #2 above?

Thanks.

Craig

Beekeeper40: Thanks for the link in response to the previous question.  I put it into my favorites and will pull it up to study when I have a little more time. I just have a simple question for now. I have a CD-ROM and CD-RW drive. It is my understanding that a DVD will not work in either drive on my machine.

I am planning on upgrading my computer around the end of the year and want to be able to play CD's and DVD's and also be able to record and store data and image file or pictures from My Compter files, in whichever is the best format, CD or DVD.  I am able to do this now, but the Roxio program seems to get overwhelmed and sometimes does want not to respond, or have I have too many megs stored for it to deal with in a short time. Thanks for any info.
