External Drive--USB#1 or USB#2

Question

i am looking at an external hardrive advertised by dell for my Dimension 8200 bought in 2001. However USB2 port is required.  Looking at my device manager it states--under 'universal serial bus controllers' that i have the following:   Intel(r)82801BA/BAM USB UNIVERSAL HOST CONTROLLER -2442 (and 2444).   there is also listed a USB Root Hub.   unable from this to tell whether these are USB 2 hubs or USB 1 Hubs.  If they are USB 1 will they work, or, if not, is there a way to get a USB 2 Hub on this computer for an external hardrive.  many thanks. feb, KCMO.

The 8200 is USB 1.1. Adding a USB 2 hub won't change that - the only way to add USB2 support is to install a USB 2 controller card. Message Edited by ejn63 on 09-21-2005 06:53 AM

You can go to support.Dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8200/specs.htm for your system specifications. You may have to insert your Service Tag. I don't recall. Anyway I went through that procedure for my Dimension 8250. All the detail specs for your system are there. I also added a Firewire card which I am using for my external Seagate 200Gb Drive.

thanks again.  this has been most helpful.  i read you can connect to a usb#1 but data transfer is very slow.

'Intel(r)82801BA/BAM USB UNIVERSAL HOST CONTROLLER -2442 (and 2444)'   This means that your system has USB 1.1    http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kb/en/document?dn=1076891&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19   USB 1.1 speed is 12MBPS, where as USB 2.0 speed is 480MBPS.     As you wish to use an external hard drive, take ejn63 advice and use the PCI USB 2.0 controller card.   Bev.
