External Hard Drive Won't Open
I have a Dell laptop 3531 and a external hard drive 1 TB with very important files I did not yet backup. When I plug hard drive into USB port, it will not acknowledge under my files, nor can I open any files on it. The light on the hard drive is lit. And when I go to devices, it does show the portable hard drive under my devices, and says is working properly. Obviously, it's not. Any advice on how to repair this?

Hi Joan,
This may be a simple as a drive letter problem. Please go to disk management with the external drive connected and tell me if you see the drive there, and if you do, does it display a drive letter.
When you write back, please let me know if you have Windows 7 or Windows 8.

Hi Joan Alley,
It might be possible that your external drive suffers an internal hardware failure such that your Operating System is unable to access and read the data in the drive. Since you don't have a backup of your data, you may have send your drive to a professional recovery service for you to retrieve and recover your important files from that failed hard drive. We always have the best luck with WeRecoverData in retrieving important data from failed hard drives so far. It is important to note that it is always best to have a backup of your important data that you cannot afford to lose to avoid cases like this to happen.
