Failure to load windows 2000
Computer is a dimension 4100, originally win 98 but upgraded to windows 2000 approx 8 months ago. Just recently have had problems with it shut down. Now it won't load at all. Comes up with the following message
Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt : \windows\system32\config\system.
Have tried repair as per microsoft document 269075 but it gets to a the point where you copy the system hive and the computer states access denied.
help please

Mount the drive in a working system as a secondary (either inside or outside using an external USB2/firewire case).
DO NOT PROCEED WITHOUT A BACKUP - DOING SO COULD BE FATAL TO YOUR DATA.
Return the drive to the system. Boot, press F12 and run the extended diagnostics on the drive. If the drive passes, skip the next step.
If the drive fails, replace it.
If the drive passes, you can continue to try a repair (which fails more often than it succeeds) or bite the bullet and reinstall everything from scratch.
Recovery usually fails to restore the registry; in about 70-80% of all cases, it's a hardware fault that causes the problem.
