Fatal blue screen & Error code 0142 on Inspiron 1501

I have an Inspiron 1501 that was purchased in November 2006.  While I was on the internet, I got the dreaded blue stop screen and now it will  not boot, not even to Safe Mode.  I have started running the Dell diagnostic program and I am gtting a few codes ..

PSAT Pre-boot system assessment:
Error Code - 0142
Msg error Code 2000-0142
Msg Unit ): Drive self test failed byte = 79

More Diagnostic tests:
Error Code - 0F00 : 137 B
Msg: IDE Device failed : Blank Media or No media ia in optical drive

Error Code - 0F00 : 065 D
Msg: IDE device failed.  The self test failed the read portion of the test.

I am running the super long test now that takes about an hour or more to see if I find more errors.

What else do you suggest I do before I get on the phone with Dell?

Michelle

The second pair of errors simply mean you didn't have a blank writeable disc in your CD/DVD writer. The first error refers to a failed hard drive.

I'm using the Inspiron 6000 laptop and the exact same thing has happened to me. I'm thinking about just wiping everything since i have my files backed up but i'm not sure how. Please, if you get any information, send me an e-mail!!

Thanks!

Does this mean all info on the HD is lost?  Can I try a format and reload or is it GONE?

I have the GREEN CD that says "Operating System" it is the reinstallation CD.

When you say "they" will replace it ... Does it mean they will come out and do it?  Or will they dend it to me for me to do?

Since it's under warranty, call Dell with the error and they will replace the drive. If you do not have an XP CD, ask for one - you will need it. You can also request a pre-imaged drive.

If the system BIOS (F2 at boot) still sees the drive, it may be possible to recover at least some data. To try, get the system back up and running with a replacement drive, mount the faulty drive in an external 2.5" SATA enclosure and connect it to the system by USB. See what you can recover. Most times, Dell will send you the drive to replace. If you have onsite service, note that they will want to take the drive with them when they send the tech - do not allow this if you want to try recovering the data. You will have a few days' time in which to recover what you can, before you must send the drive back to Dell.
