In the Device Manager, remove the Floppy Disk Drive and Floppy Drive Controller. Reboot and let Windows re-install.
Failing this then you probably need a new floppy disk drive.

Thank you very much for your assistance.  I did what you said & it appears I need a new one but at least now I know.  Score **** for you :)
