Free space

Question

Well, I just recently installed a new drive and I decided to move some files over (around 5 gbs), but it didn't free up any space on my other drive.  Then i didn't need the files anymore, so I deleted it, but then my new drive's free space went down, so I formatted that one, and now that's back up to what it used to be.  My question is how do I free up the 5 gbs of space on my old drive when I moved the files over? The files gone, so I should have 5gbs more, but it is still the same.

When you 'moved' the files you probably only copied them, and will have to delete them from the original drive to free the additional space.

I did delete them from my original drive.  but the free space thingy didn't change. I have it at around 4 gbs of free space left, and it should've gone up.

After deleting the files, did you empty the Recycle Bin? Steve

Are you referring to 'free space' as shown under the drive properties or 'free unpartitioned space' that might show under 'disk management' or in a program such as 'partition magic'? The amount of unpartitioned free space will not change as the result of deleting data from another partition.

I am referring to the 'free space' under my drive's property.  And I cut the files from one drive to another, so the files from the original aren't there anymore, then i deleted it in the new drive, but the free space in my original drive didn't go up the 5gbs it was suppose to

Have you tried running chdsk /f and then defragmenting the drive?
