GX620 CD burning issue

I have a combo CD-RW/DVD drive that seems to burn fine in the morning when the system is "cool" but in the afternoon after it has been on for a while it fails to burn. I checked the cooling fans thinking it was a heat issue but they seem to be fine. Could it be just a defective drive? Thanks.
