hal.dll error & Failed to successfully scan disk for windows installations
i got the message: windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupted
/system32/hal.dll
i have been trying to repair using the xp cd, however something i notice when it gets to the section where it should ask you for administrator password and the select the number for the drive i dont get either of these notifications it just goes directly to the c:\ prompt, why is that?
also when i type bootcfg /list at the c:\ prompt i get "There are currently no boot entries available to display
when i type bootcfg / rebuild i get "Failed to successfully scan disks for windows installaitons. this error may be caused by a corrupt file system, which would prevent Bootcfg to successfully scanning. Use chkdsk to detect any errors.
when i run chkdsk it says it found one or more errors on the volume, how do i repair thise?
also when i try to to change directory to access c:\windows using c:\cd windows i get "The path or file specified is not valid.

first try to check the hdd for any errors by running the diagnostic
go to the boot menu by pressing F12 on the dell logo when you turn on the computer
go to diagnostic or ide drive diagnostic. another option is running the diagnostic using the resource cd(dimension system) or system software cd(inspiron system) just boot to the cd and select custom test and look for harddrive on the list.
