Hard Disk Password (please read)

Yes, I know there's a million threads on this, but I have a out-of-warranty Inspiron B120 with a Toshiba 40GB hard drive. I set a HDD password, and promptly forgot it. I am out of warrenty, so I don't know what to do, because there are no other options of support. I have very important data on this hard drive, and I would not like to format it.

You face two issues. You MUST call Dell to solve the first one - i.e., to remove the password from the system BIOS. Upon proof of ownership, they will issue you a master password. The other issue is the password on the drive itself. On some drives, once set, if forgotten, the only way to remove it is with special software. If that's the case, even a master password won't help you - you can have the password removed, but it won't be inexpensive - about $100 for a basic removal. For that service, contact www.nortek.on.ca. They will likewise require proof of ownership before service is rendered.

How do I call Dell, though? It automatically asks for my Service Tag #, which links me up with no warranty -- and no consumer rep to talk with.

If you're out of warranty, try calling Customer Service, not technical support - though you may wind up having to pay for the incident.

Try this link for $47 since you have a Toshiba HDD
