Hard drive Diagnostics error 2000-0142
So I was working on my laptop (Dell Inspiron n4050 Windows 7 Ultimate) and I had to head out for a while. I left the laptop on and when I returned, this was on the screen:
I rebooted and ran the Diagnostics Tool after pressing F12. These results came up.
So I understand that my hard drive is not working. I searched a lot about this particular error and it turns out I need to replace the hard drive. Also I can't seem to find any information regarding the message "self test unsuccessful status = 3".
Is there any possible way to recover the data on the hard drive externally, as in by using a connector to another PC?
What other steps can I do to ensure that the data is not lost?

Hi,
Unfortunately there is no real way to easily tell if that data is recoverable or not. A lot depends on what failed on the hard drive. There are a lot of posts out on the internet that provide suggestions on how to recover data. Or you can go to an electronics store and pay to see if they can recover the data.
I can't suggest specific ways to try to recover the data but you can do a Google search and find tons of links to read. Some people have been able to simply put the drive into an external, USB connection, hard drive kit and been able to pull data off that way.
I wish there was more that I could do to help you. Good luck.

You could try recovering the files and folders from the failed hard drive, by removing the hard drive and use a USB SATA, adaptor similar to this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182313
Then connect the hard drive to working computer and see if you can transfer the files and folders.
Note: Only data files and folders can be transfered, any applications, utilities and programs, need to be reinstalled from their CD's, or downloaded from the publisher's website.
If this fails to work, you would need the services of a Data Recovery Company, to recover the files and this can be very expensive.

I have the same issue. Error Code 2000-0142, Validation 93185. Was hoping I could reinstall Windows and then try to move the files off of the current hard drive onto a replacement drive. Dell says it no longer supports Windows 7 and so I can't download.
My bigger worry is losing all the licensed software that came with the machine (Office, for example). Is there any way to get restore software to put on the new hard drive (assuming I'm able to recover the actual files on the bad drive)? If so what do I need to do?

It's always handy to include the computer model, when posting an issue.
The hard drive has failed, reinstalling windows, which is unlikely on a failed HD, will not help.
Do you have the product keys for the licensed software?
One of the easiest procedures for transferring the files and folders, is to remove the failed hard drive
from the laptop and use a USB adaptor similar to THIS,attach the hard drive to an USB port on a
working computer, then try to transfer the files and folders to it.
If the hard drive is too damaged, the above may not work, then you would need the services of a data recovery company and this could be expensive.
Note: Only data files and folders can be transferred, any applications, utlities and programs, need to be reinstalled from their CD's, or downloaded from the publisher's website.
