Hard Drive Errors - Help!!!

Hi,

My System

Dimension 9200

Dell Model DXP061

300GB hard disc

Vista 32bit

I recently got a hard drive error reported on Port:

It says:

SOME VOLUME ERRORS

some data requests to a hard drive in a RAID 0 volume failed, backup may be possible. Please try back up data immediately.

Also on the start up BIO scree it is reporting that an error occured.

My computer seems to be starting up ok, if a bit slowly?

does any one know what may cause this, any help most welcome.

I am reasonable at fixing my own computer but am very new to VISTA, and also know very little about hard drives or RAID volumes etc.

I was thinking of trying a complete hard disc wipe and system install as my next step if no one can help me, then I think it will have to be off to the shop to get it sorted.

THIS IS A REPORT I PRINTED OFF USING Intel Matrix storage Console

Back up immediately.  To confirm the drive failure, boot to the Dell diagnostics (F12) and run the extended test on both drives.  If one of them fails, replace it - you will then need to load everything from ground up - a single drive failure on RAID 0 destroys the array and necessitates a complete rebuild.

thanks very much for quick reply, I have all important stuff backed up. I run the diagnostic tool in boot up screen, both drives PASSED. weird. the computer seems to be running fine now also, I marked the drive as ok in the intel matrix storage console, which got rid of the error message. Not sure what to do now, I may just monitor the situation closely for a while and see if any problems occur. What do you think?

Did you run the extended test (takes about 2 hours/drive)?

June 2nd, 2008 06:00

I checked again, definately no option for an extended scan through the f12 hard disc diagnostic route!

No, I don't recall seeing that option, will have another look though.

thanks

You must boot to the Dell diagnostic partition (this is not the quick diagnostic built into the BIOS).  Once you've done that, run the quick test and boot to the 32-bit graphical interface.  You'll see the list of tests you can run - one of which is the full surface analysis of the hard drive.

Hi, how do I boot to the dell diagnostic partition, I also ran a hard disc scan from vista, this scheduled a scan at next start up, this took a couple of hours, was that the scan?!

thanks for being so patient!!
