Hard Drive Failed Diagnostics

I just performed diagnostics on hard drive.  Results came back as "fail" "return code 7.  What does this mean? Do I need new hard drive?

Thanks for thoughts or suggestions.

That means the hard drive has failed, backup any data you wish to save,   If under warranty, contact Dell Technical Support for the replacement and tell them the error message, if not shop around for a new hard drive.

Does anyone know of anywhere to find what the failure codes mean? I've found "how to run" articles but nothing that tells me what these tests mean.

Thanks,

Error Code 7 means the drive failed its self-test.

Thanks.

Dell is shipping hard drive for replacement.  Since I am also encountering "missing or corrupt file ... system32\config\system" error message, guess that there is no way to back the bad hard drive.

There may still be hope. Disconnect the drive and set it aside. Once you're back up and running on the new drive (after installing and patching Windows), attach the drive as a seconday and try to copy what you can.

Even though the registry is corrupt and Windows won't boot, you may be able to rescue some or all of your data files.
