Hard drive making noises.
Ok my hard drive is making a very bad grinding noise when I turn the computer on/off, when I load from a disk, and sometimes when I try to play games and open large files. Does this mean it's about to die, because on my old computer a couple of weeks after I started hearing these noises my hard drive broke. I have an Ultra ATA/100 7200RPM hard drive. Also since I have 3 year limited warranty and at home service does that mean if it does die someone from dell will come to my house and install a new one? Thanks for any reply.

YES YES WHAT HE SAID! My hubsters had that happen with HD noise, and he waited too long to check it out... the entire HD was rendered useless scrap and NO retrieval of any files was even remotely possible.
This is relevant even tho his PC is a Compaq (mine is a Dell)... he was told that Compaq uses the cheapest of the cheapest MAXTOR HDs and that they commonly just "break" after a few years. And he'd only had his for 4 years with NO internet use. Business use only, and not heavy use. Thank heavens he had his Quickbooks Pro stuff saved onto floppies, but he lost all his other documents. Now he saves onto Memory Sticks and CD.

Hi,
Backup all your critical data onto another media source as a matter of extreme urgency and call Dell.
Noisy hard disks are almost always seriously bad news.
