hard drive not seen by computer

I have a dell demension 4600 with a p4 2.8 ghz processor, 512mb memory, 40 gig hitachi deskstar hd, about a week ago I installed a maxtor dimondmax 10  200 gig hd on the slave section of the primary ide cable, both drives set to cable select, I am rumming win XP sp2, I came home from work, and the wife said that the computer is making a strange sound, and it is frozen.  I determined that the new drive was making the click of death, so I removed it, now the computer will not boot correctly,  The dell bios screen comes up (Bios revision A08) stays for a minute, then a message "primary drive 1 not found  strike the f1 to continue, f2 to run the setup utility" if you hit any of the buttons, the computer will start into windows, if you enter setup at the bios screen, and check the HD section the computer see's the drive, and lists its size,  if any one can help, it would be greatly appreciated, I am running out of hair to pull out.

Disable the setting for Primary Drive 1 and the system should boot properly.

Use the TAB key to find the field, then toggle until the field says "off", "none", or "not present".
