That is a very Zen like question ;-)
For a data drive, you do not need a primary partition. Just extended partion and logical drive to occupy the entire available capacity of the drive.
For a boot drive with your system in it, you *do* need a primary partition for the "boot" portion.
Happy formatting & be sure to use Disk Management in WinXP -- it makes life so much easier.
