Hard Drive Partitioning
I just had to put a new 40 gig HD in my Inspiron 8200. For days now I have been scouring the internet to try to learn or get advice on how I should partition the new drive. In a way, one might think that the following would make sense, in fact many say this is the way to go. Separate partitions for
- Operating System (XP)
- Programs
- Data
However, I know that if I install a program on a drive other than C that some of it will go on C anyway, so now I don't have a C drive with operating system only right? And if I reformat C then I will need to reinstall the programs on the next drive right? So is there a point? Should the data stay with the programs? Should the programs stay with the operating system? I've read so much that I am totally confused.
Can I put "My Documents " and "Desktop" on a separate drive? Or maybe I can only back them up to one. What about Outlook Express? Can those files go on a data drive?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

As far as having a seperate drive for your programs is a matter of preference. I used to put my operating system on my C:\ drive and programs on my D:\ drive. I have since abandoned that idea. I now install the OS and programs on my C:\ drive. I have one partition for nothing but my data files. When I back up my data, it is easy to do.
And if I have to reinstall my OS for whatever reason, I do not loose any of my data files. I go one step farther than you suggested. I have one partition that contains a ghost image of my OS/program files (C:\ drive). If I need to reinstall the OS, I just use Ghost and my backup image to get up and going quickly. This way, I do not have to re-install all of my programs.

I have two notebooks that I use. The one that I use for home stuff, I have the Ghost image on a seperate partition.
But the one I use for work, I save to a hard drive that is in the Media Bay because my work data is critical and loosing it would be a real loss - years of research and designs that could never be recovered. That way, if my hard drive crashes, I can easily replace the data.

Any thoughts on this one? I used partition Magic 8 to partition my drive and now I have a couple of very large files I can't get rid of. I think I got one when I got rid of a partition and it became a folder on the previous partition. I named it "delete me" so I wouldn't forget to. Its 62 mb and contains 208 files in 23 folders. I can not see what they are though. I think they may be Norton Antivirus folders because when I tried to compress it I saw the names go flying bye. I get the error message "Can not delete system volume information: Acess is denied".
On another drive there is a huge one. This one is 1.56 GB!! Could this one be a page file? It's a singler file. I've tried everything I can think of but can not delete either of these.
