Hard drive problem ? Operating system file corrupt? What should I do?
When I attempt to boot up my D8400 desktop it locks or I get an error message instructing me to run chkdsk from the recovery console. Last attempt did not get past loading drivers in safe mode.
When I ran 'chkdsk /r' from the recovery console the machine stuck at 51% for over 6 hours on 2 separate attempts.
When bootup to diagnostic utility by pushing during startup the hard drive passes the express and detailed diagnostics with no issues.
I am tentatively planning to reload the operating system......However, I noticed that there are 3 partitions on the machine. Review of 'My Computer Information' that was printed the day the machine was new showed 3 partitions of the following sizes: 70.57MB, 3.49GB, and 145.46GB. I assume one of the partitions was the diagnostic utility above. What are the other 2? Should I keep all 3 partitions? Does the operating system go in the largest partition? Should I reload the operating system? Please advise.

As you ran the extended test [ read, write, verify ] on the hard drive and it passed.
Instead of reinstalling XP, you could use the PC Restore by Symantec utility, this would revert the system to it's factory settings.

Try running the Dell diagnostic's extended test, read, write, verify, on the hard drive, not the quickie express test.
How to use Dell's Diagnostic Utility
70.57MB partition is the Dell Diagnostics.
3.49GB partition is the Dell PC Restore by Symantec Utility, that reverts the system to it's factory settings..
145.46GB is the C:/ partition.
If you carry out a clean reinstall of XP, you only need to keep the Diagnostics partition.
