Hard Drive Rip-Off

I just purchased a Inspiron 6400.
Can someone please tell me why my 80gig hard drive is only 67gig total not including the 4gig for software and operating system stuff ?  The hard drives seen to keep shrinking more every time I purchase a new computer.

In the future, by using the Advanced Forum Search on the bottom of this page, you can quite easily find the answer to this often asked question.

An 80gb drive is 74.4gb.  http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kb/en/document?dn=1024750

The recovery partition by itself is 3-4gb.  Down to 70.4 - 71.4.

The OS and other stuff is the rest.

hi Scott,
 
            Well if u purchase a HDD for 80 GB then it will show abt 67 GB that's fine because a 80 GB HDD actually have abt 76 GB space.  The DELL HDD has a seperate utility partition which stores the image of the operating system, all the preloaded softwares and diagnostics. Apart from that there is also a seperate partition for the DELL MEDIA EXPERIENCE and that is abt 2 GB.
