My exact problem and attempted solution.  Came on 9-18-08, after I had used CD earlier that morning. Still hunting for solution, intend to uninstall both D and E (player and RW), then open tower and unplug the units, replug and  maybe it will fool the computer.

Hi dragonballnuts and Bob Ho. :smileyhappy: dragon, I saw that you mentioned that you hadn't uninstalled/reinstalled any burner software lately. Is that also the case for games (ex. Spore, Mass Effect, Sims2, Bioshock)? That question is for both of you. Also dragon, did you do any of the troubleshooting that was suggested in the first thread you made? If so, what were the results?

OH, thanks WKIDD, did try uninstall/reinstall hardware, no luck.  Could iTunes be a problem?

No luck yet. Haven't disconnected D or E yet. Did Get System Restore to work again, but it only restores to the 24th, nothing before the problems with D and E drives. Go to START, MYCOMPUTER, VIEW SYSTEM INFORMATION (upper left column), click SYSTEM RESTORE, click "Turn off system restore", APPLY, OK, restart computer.  Go back and unclick "TURN Off SYSTEM RESTORE", etc. I was able to set up restore point for that day and I guess the days after, as long as it's before today.

I have a Dell 4600, running Windows Vista, but not running cd/cdrw!

I'm having the exact same problem.  Just started 2 days ago.  Please advise.  Also, deleted the Upper and lower, per Microsoft solutions.

Thanks!

 Update:
This worked for me:

I tried editing the Registry with the info from the link that you provided.  That did not fix it.  It would not allow me to delete some of the keys or edit some of the values.

HOWEVER...the fix at the following link worked!

http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/english/updates.html

I appreciate your help!

The error messages started after I loaded a new Warner Bros. CD (that I purchased) to ITunes.  The name of the CD is "Paper Trail by T.I." (Hip Hop). Good Luck.

Now I'm having another problem.  I'm getting the following error message in iTunes:

The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing.  This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software.  Please reinstall iTunes.

When uninstall and reinstall iTunes, it does not fix the problem.

Any advise.

Thanks!

Bob Ho: Your system sounds like Windows XP to me, not Vista. After you click on View System Information you should see a General tab that gives the operating system version. Check that again to see if it is in fact XP. The first thing that caught my eye about that was that you said My Computer and not Computer which is the way that it shows up in Vista.

With respect to the issue you are having with the drive, there are a number of possible causes. iTunes is one of them. The Sony issue that derekra had is another. In your first post you mentioned that you lost the drive after using the "CD earlier that morning," were you playing a cd and if so do you remember what it was? If so, check the back of that cd and see if it has a Sony BMG label on it. If it does then the fix that derekra used will probably work for you as well. If not then we can look at other possible causes such as iTunes.

One last thought, why are you turning off system restore? You should be leaving that checkbox empty so that system restore creates restore points for you. That is probably why you didn't have any earlier than the 24th. What you are looking at using the path that you took is the settings for system restore and not system restore itself. To actually set and restore using system restore you should use this path: Start => All Programs => Accessories => System Tools => System Restore. This will bring up the System Restore Wizard which allows you to set a restore point as well as go back to a previous restore point. Once you've read through all this let me know about the cd that I mentioned in the previous paragraph.

derekra: Thanks for posting the info on your solution. That's the second time that I've seen the "Sony rootkit issue." I have a couple of favors to ask: 1) can you post the info on the cd (artist and title) that you loaded that was from Sony BMG and 2) please update your post in the other thread to show that you have solved it (to keep people from trying to solve it again) :smileyhappy: Thanks again.

I think I've been lucky so far. I've loaded up my whole cd collection (around 500) and haven't run across a Sony BMG that has that issue. There was one that I saw a year or two back (Velvet Revolver) that I believe had that problem and I put off buying it until it was taken off that particular title. I think most of them have some kind of warning on the front about copy protection (the ones that have the problems).

Williamkidd,  Tx, you're right, I have Dell 4600, running XP. Tried to correct that but no correcting once you've typed and submitted.  About System Restore:  Somewhere in the Forum someone said the no restoring could be fixed, one could remove the no-restore points by shutting off System Restore, and rebooting.  It shut off all restore points, but I have it back on now, just won't let me go back earlier than Sept 24.  First had problem with no cd/dvd, cd burner drives on the 18th.

The last cd I'd played was an Office Max cd-r loaded with songs I'd burned from several other cd's.  First installed iTunes and iPod late July.  Have no Sony discs that I know of.  Been loading the ipod with composite cd-r's since early August 08.  Even downloaded the Sony cloaking removal thing someone suggested on the Forum.  Didn't work.

HOWEVER, I followed your advice, uninstalled Quicktime, iTunes, and even iPod with add/remove programs. Then about an hour ago, 11:30 PM 10-4-08 I uninstalled the Sony fix, restarted, and the D and E drives showed back up.  Followed your links for separate install of Quicktime and iTunes.  The itunes said it was loading Quicktime anyhow.  When iTunes opened after the install, the window that says itunes has a registry problem and you should reinstall itunes came up as it has since the problem began.  But for now (as of 12:43 AM 10-05-08) the D and E are still showing up on "My Computer".

Maybe everything's gonna work now.  God bless you and all the others who offer your assistance in this no-man's land of technology.

derekra:

Your link to the sonybmg.com removal routine is the only one suggesting this as a fix I have run across in all the surfing I have done in the last 3 months.  This worked for me also!  Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I have a Dell Dim 4550 running XP home SP3.

iTunes 8.02.20

I ran the Microsoft "remove the upper/lower filters" fix, using the 'guided help' software.

article [Q314060].

This resulted in a dead end until tonight.  Removing the DRM crud gave me back my drives!  I did NOT have to re-install windows (the nuclear option, which I was seriously contemplating.)
