Help! New Dells won't Format CD-RW's

Have new Demension 4600C and Inspiron 5100 using Nero6 software and when I try to format a new CD-RW disc it goes all the way through the process and then a box pops up saying can't format this disc due to a scratch or a not compatible disc. Tried this same disc on two other pc's I have with Nero6 and it works fine. Anybody have an idea as to why these two new Dells won't format? Dell Tech is stumpted.

Is it a high-speed CD-RW disk.
The new machines require a high-speed disk to work correctly. Look on the box of disks, it should say "For HIGH SPEED DRIVE" 4X - 10X"
Are the other PC's equiped with high-speed drives.

Post back if this does not relate.

Is there any other CD Burning software on the PC?  Nero's InCd has known to have problems if there is another program such as Roxio's Direct CD on the same system.

Only record program on both systems is Nero6. They came with Sonic RecordNow but I removed it so that all of our pc's would have the same software. Also, the Sonic software would not let a formatted disc be wriien to in another pc, only the one that formatted it. This was confirmed by Dell Tech Support.

Sonic? That would mean it also came with a packet writer called DLA.

Double check to make sure you have DLA removed too.

Thanks Jim, Good point. I am currently on Jury Duty and will check for DLA files when I am back in the office.I sure hope this is the problem. Why can't they make CD'd as easy to use as floppies were?

Rjon: The faster you convict them, the sooner you go home…

CDs have more in common with a phonograph record than a floppy. In fact they were designed to do one thing, play music. Because some nimrod thought it would be cool to use them in PCs we have suffered ever since…
