Help on 2nd HD please!

I'm going to install a 2nd HD on my Dimension 8100 using Maxtor 160GB 8MB Cache Ultra ATA/133 thru I/O Flex Ultra ATA/133 Dual Channel PCI Raid Controller. I just recently reformatted my old 40GB HD and install XP w/ SP2. My question is.. how to configure the new HD effeciently, shall I use it as a master or a slave (with XP installed on it)? I've tried using it as a master connected to the Raid Controller but the new HD is not recognized. If using it as a slave will you guys recommend intalling XP on it so I can run some Image and Video editting programs on it? Thanks a lot.
