help replacing cd-r with dvd-r

Hi, I have a malfunctioning cd-r drive in my Inspiron 1000. I have been meaning to put a dvd-r drive in and I figured this is the perfect time. I found some new on ebay, but before I buy one I just want to know what I need for software. I am running all the original software that came with the computer (Win XP). Would the info already be in the disks that came with the computer, or do I need specific disks for the new drive?

P.S. - I already know how to remove and replace the drive, I have disassembled the computer for other issues. It's actually very easy if you dont lose any tiny screws!

What do you use to write to a CD?  Apart from Windows XP CD writing wizard, any other software you have should support writing to DVD also, if not, there are freeware available.  Here's one:  http://www.cdburnerxp.se/

If you want to watch DVD movies using the new drive, you will need to install a 3rd party player/decoder, even when you have Windows Media Player.  Dell notebooks with DVD drive come with CyberLink PowerDVD, but I don't think it is bundled with your original CD drive.

Well, I'm not worried about burning software. I just need to know if there's any any software I need that's associated with installing the new dvd-rw drive.   Sorry, I should have been more clear.

None.  Windows should detect the drive on the next boot and install using the standard driver for CD and DVD drives.  You could uninstall the existing CD drive from Device Manager before you shut down the computer to replace it with the DVD drive but it isn't necessary
