Help, sound from both disk drives is distorted

I have a 4 year old Dell Dimension 8250 series. It came with 2 CD drives. One of the drives I replaced a year ago with a DVD RW drive. All have been functining well until recently when I began to note garbled and distorted sound from BOTH disk drives equally. Any music or other sound like Quick Time or SWF files on the hard drive, or from the internet have normal sound. Furthermore, even though the sound direct from a music CD is distorted if I rip it to the hard drive it then plays normally from the hard drive. I have updated the driver. What is puzzling is that the sound distortion is only related to the disk drives. If the problem was only one drive I would assume it was a defective drive, but hardly it is unlikely there would be TWO defective drives at the same time. Any ideas?

Hi Abcasebolt,

Almost sounds like the drives have dropped in PIO mode instead of DMA mode.
Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, articles 14 & 17.
It should say UDMA-2.

Best Regards

Jeff,
Thank you so much for the information! It solved all of my problems. If only now I could figure out why neither drive will auto play.

Hi Allen,

Glad to hear the news on the sound issue. As for the Autoplay, same CD/RW link; Section 100, articles 57 through 61. These are from Microsoft on Autorun / play issues. If none of those helps, Section 6-5, article 11, the Autoplay Rrepair Wizard may help.

Best Regards!

Thank you Jeff,

I went through all of the registry entries and all were ok. Then I ran the wizard and the problem is now solved whatever it was. You are a lifesaver. I have bookmarked the website for further reference. Thanks again.
